Program Description

Due to environmental constraints, requirements to reduce vehicle travel and climate change impacts, high infrastructure costs and changing market demands, there are few remaining opportunities for large-scale suburban/exurban development.  New development increasingly is higher density infill or redevelopment, in established urban areas, with an emphasis on walkability and proximity to transit.  At the same time, there is growing public resistance to such development if it is perceived as changing existing neighborhood character or failing to benefit existing residents.  This makes development increasingly subject to stricter regulations, opposition in regulatory proceedings and legal/environmental challenges.

A panel of experts with experience in both the private and public sectors will present a moderated discussion on the regulatory challenges to development in urban locations.  Using actual projects as examples, they will discuss planning and regulatory constraints, environmental regulatory issues, and ways to effectively address those concerns.

This program will be of interest to lawyers working in the areas of real estate, land use and environmental law.  It also will be of interest to non-lawyers working in the related fields of urban planning, environmental consulting, entitlements processing and project management, among others.
